Nevvy tried to follow the vanishing footprints left by the human child who had so kindly brought food out to the colony -- fruit, vegetables, and nuts, sugared and spiced.
Cold snow and ice had locked everything down for several weeks now, and most members of the Watson Park Angel Snake Academy lay at the bottom of the warren in the deep torpor of hibernation.
Snow was falling fast and the wind would soon cover those tracks. The real problem at hand was getting the offering into the warren before it froze. Nevvy would need to fetch some others to help, and reveal that he had been out in the snow alone--strictly against the safety rules. He had simply not been able to lie quietly in his hole any longer. The rules were not enough to keep him inside.
No matter the consequences, at this time of year, the food was too valuable to leave out in the snow for the lizards to find. The only thing left was to go straight to the headmistress, confess his sin, and let her powerful voice rouse the numbers necessary to haul everything inside.
Then would he consider his penance.
